Session Overview
Wireless in Buildings & Energy
Track: Study of Wireless Controls & Monitoring Applications
Thursday 5-October-2006
11:00 - 12:00
Two of the most compelling application area of wireless is the control and monitoring of building systems and energy/power systems. This session explores numerous case studies in these sectors including deployment of sensors, in-building lighting, street lighting, AMR (Automated Meter Reading) and Demand response and management.

Modern office buildings require high flexibility in order to adapt office space to fast changing organizations and markets. Flexible partitioning walls support this demand, and wireless switches and sensors offer a solution for fast and simple reconstruction and optimized control systems. Batteryless radio sensors combine the advantages of wired systems with wireless technology resulting in maintenance-free products offering total flexibilty in the building. Looking at the value chain in commercial buildings, wireless technology has impact on every involved party: starting at the technology provider, OEMs, architects, M&E consultants, system integrators, installers, facility managers and finally the person who is switching on the light at a known device. The presentation will share key learnings of implementing the batteryless radio technology in various buildings all over Europe. Based on real building projects, the whole process from planning, installation and use of wireless systems is analysed from the perspective of the involved parties, focussing on technical aspects such as radio planning as well as commercial aspects such as cost comparison analysis.
